DAARTT

Overview

DAARTT is specialized in planning, design and construction of buildings and in building capacity in all aspects of construction.

Its core staff consists of highly experienced Afghan engineers and architects. In addition, DAARTT is able to draw on a network of international experts.

With support from key development partners such as the World Bank, DANIDA, the European Union, Norway, UNODC, UNHCR, Danish Refugee Council, the Afghan Ministry of Education, and private donors, DAARTT has for instance:

constructed more than 200 schools, clinics, dormitories, justice and other buildings in Afghanistan

supported key ministries in the development of school designs for the Citizen  s Charter and the World Bank  s Education Quality Reform in Afghanistan (EQRA) programme

monitored more than 100 construction projects for donors.

Origin

DAARTT was founded by the Danish People  s Aid (DPA) in 2003, with the aim to build schools and provide technical on-the-job training in Afghanistan.

Originally DAARTT was part of a DPA co-owned NGO in Afghanistan, the Danish Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees (DACAAR), commencing operation in 1989 as DACAAR  s Buildings Department.

What we do

DAARTT constructs schools and other buildings, monitors construction activities on behalf of donors and Afghan authorities, and builds capacity for construction and management of construction activities.
DAARTT is also involved in providing humanitarian support to people in need.

Aim

DAARTT aims at promoting equitable development in Afghanistan, in particular related to construction.

DAARTT promotes access to primary and secondary education through school buildings favouring attendance of girls and to higher education through dormitories for female students.

When building schools, DAARTT also promotes quality of education.

DAARTT helps promote access to justice and health services by making proper buildings available for the Afghan justice and health systems.

In carrying out its activities, DAARTT aims at mobilizing and empowering local communities and building capacities of local and central authorities in support of equitable development.

As part of its construction activities, DAARTT provides local workers with technical skills through on-site training.

DAARTT also aims at easing the plight of vulnerable Afghan people who find themselves in a humanitarian or emergency situation by providing shelters or elements for shelters and other necessary assistance to those in need.

How we work

DAARTT works in compliance with national and local plans and in close cooperation with local authorities and communities.

DAARTT is dependent on donor funding for its activities. Its priorities and plans therefore reflect the organization  s objectives as well as its competitive advantage seen from a funding perspective.
